About Michael Murphy

I’m a hands-on, innovative Mechanical Engineer with 19+ years of experience developing complex mechanical systems across medical devices, surgical hardware, and high-volume manufactured products. I specialize in taking products from concept to production with a deep focus on design integrity, manufacturability, and cross-functional alignment. My background spans DFM/DFA/DFX, SolidWorks and Onshape, GD & T (ASME Y14.5), 1D/3D tolerance stacks, FEA, injection molding, plastic and metal part design, and mechanism development. I’ve spent much of my career in ISO 13485 environments, supporting design controls, DFMEA, V&V, DHF documentation, supplier qualification, and regulatory/quality systems.I’ve partnered closely with domestic and overseas manufacturers, including trips to China for tooling qualification, process debugging, and early builds. I implemented SolidWorks PDM at a medical device manufacturer and helped roll out Onshape–Arena PLM integration at a high-volume hardware company, improving CAD standards, revision control, and ECO/NPI processes. As a senior, hands-on engineer, I’ve also led small technical teams, mentored junior engineers, and developed trainings on mechanical fundamentals, drawings & GD & T, tolerance analysis, CTQs, and NPI best practices. I recently completed a yearlong Franklin Covey leadership program (including “7 Habits” and “Leading at the Speed of Trust”), receiving 100% positive 360° feedback on trust-building, communication, and collaboration.I thrive where mechanical complexity meets real-world manufacturability—whether that’s surgical positioning systems, MRI-compatible hardware, or high-pressure mechanical products—and I enjoy roles that combine deep individual contributor work with the opportunity to guide and support a small technical team.Specialties: Mechanical system design, mechanisms, DFM/DFA/DFX, GD & T, tolerance analysis, FEA, injection molding, medical device design controls, DFMEA, V&V, ISO 13485, SolidWorks, Onshape, PDM/PLM workflows, supplier collaboration, global manufacturing support, and hands-on prototyping & test.
