The Fleet Controller\'s primary responsibility is to support the line operation to assure dispatch of airworthy, legal and safe aircraft, particularly when a technical situation exists not covered by routine procedures. This requires proper interpretation of written material and interaction with other technical resources to ensure the best decision is made. They have authority and responsibility for making final decisions concerning the course of action required for the safe and airworthy operation of our aircraft.The controller is required to assist aircraft in flight with mechanical defects when requested by the flight crew. The assistance is designed to correct the problem when able, or if unable, to ensure the flight crew has a clear understanding of the problem and its impact on the continuation of flight. In some unusual cases, where a significant defect exists jeopardizing the safety of flight, the controller will collaborate with other organizations as required to determine the best course of action.At stations with non-United mechanics they direct the work to ensure a legal and airworthy aircraft. At maintenance stations, the controllers will oversee all maintenance activity. He authorizes or coordinates with line engineering on line Engineering Change / Repair Authorization (EC/RA) for situations not covered by United’s maintenance manuals.The controller is responsible to contribute to the development and communication of the maintenance plan for aircraft at the stations while ensuring the highest quality standards are maintained consistent with corporate values and objectives. They interact and assist with the fleet planners, engine maintenance controllers, fleet coordinators and line maintenance personnel with troubleshooting and research of aircraft maintenance problems. They also promote a positive work environment that supports a team effort and encourages safety with open communication.
