About Michael Menser

I teach at Brooklyn College in Philosophy and Urban Sustainability at the City University of NY Graduate Center in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Environmental Psychology. I am the co-director of the NYC Climate Justice Hub, a partnership between CUNY and the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, where I coordinate and support community led research teams and mentor undergraduate and graduate fellows. I am also the Associate Director for Public Engagement of the Science and Resilience Institute and Jamaica Bay and the co-director of the newly launched Public Power Observatory with Ashley Dawson. My main areas of research are environmental and climate justice and participatory democracy and environmental philosophy especially in the context of public ownership and management of the electricity system amidst the energy transition. I am also part of the Campaign to Reimagine LIPA (the power authority of Long Island New York), and Public Power NY and am doing a research project on public power and the democratization of public services. I am also co-leading the first ever tree inventory and canopy analysis at Brooklyn College and support multiple vegetable and wildflower garden efforts there and am a proud member of the Environmental Justice Working Group for our union, the Professional Staff Congress/AFT.
