Over seven years ago, the Austin community, much like the nation at large, was discussing and debating the cause and effects of the alarming number of African American male students who were disproportionately represented among those expelled or suspended from public schools nationally, statewide and locally. I grew tired of us talking about the issue and decided to do something about it. I wanted to simply “Change the Story” for our youth and community. It was this catalyst that birthed the African American Men and Boys Foundation, which later grew into the African American Youth Harvest Foundation (AAYHF). In 2011, AAYHF opened the African American Youth Resource Center (AAYRC) in order to provide a centrally- located hub and comprehensive service approach for serving youth and adults primarily residing in Northeast Austin. Today, African American Youth Harvest Foundation stands as a premier youth-serving nonprofit organization whose mission is to advocate, to strengthen, and to provide culturally competent, family centered educational, health and human services, and economic development opportunities to African American youth and other at-risk populations that reside in the Greater Austin area. Here are just some of our accomplishments to date: In 2013, over 8500 youth and families accessed services through AAYRC In April 2012 to April 2013, AAYHF’s Family Academy received well over 500 referrals from Travis County JP Courts provided 6200 of classroom hours of intervention services.I am happy to report, we are “Changing the Story” for our youth every day.
