ABOUT MICHAEL KITCHING
My background is simply that as a pilot in the RAF and my passion has always been aviation and people. People must come first. I have been privileged to provide global support to UK/NATO military tasking; humanitarian aid relief, aeromedical evacuation missions, repatriation ceremonies and strategic support to our troops. This exposure has often placed my crew into the unknown or outside of the expected when it comes to aviation and gave me a ‘survivors’ insight to the mindset of those doing the same 24/7 around the world. Knowledge of how demanding these situations can be has led to a natural progression into Air Safety/Safety Management. While following my passion I held roles of increasing responsibility from C-17 Globemaster Captain to Officer Commanding Falklands 1312 Flight and Deputy Air Defence Commander, before assuming the lead position in the 2 Group Assurance Team. My current role as the Multi Engine Lead in the RAF Safety Centre allows me to influence and engage with senior levels of Defence and liaise with a wider audience in NATO and the civilian sector. I am able to pass on my experience to the next generation of pilots operating safely at the forefront of military support activities worldwide. Our system contains many known and unknown threats and requires our commitment and constant focus. We challenge established norms and assumptions and educate people on the dangers of hindsight bias. This requires me to share knowledge and experience from my career and personal studies to all that will listen.and even some that won\'t, whatever the personal cost. Backed by a team of dedicated professionals, we strive for continuous improvement and valued engagement through better understanding and awareness of Flight Data Analysis Programmes, Fatigue Risk Management Systems, BowTie Development, Risk Management, Safety Culture and Road Safety Campaigns which are designed to ensure that our systems are efficient and that our people come home safely, every time.
