About Michael Hayashi

I currently serve as an Engineer in Product Applications for the Patient Monitoring team in the Digital Healthcare division of Analog Devices. In that capacity, I answer customer questions about existing products and evaluate new products for introduction to the market. By combining years doing advanced electrical engineering with deep multidisciplinary knowledge, I deliver insightful quantitative knowledge to some of the most complex technological problems facing the world. I have extensive experience with simulation in a research and corporate setting, including frequency-domain circuits, time-domain circuits, electrostatic problems, magnetic and thermal equivalent circuits, full-wave electromagnetic effects, and mechanical statics problems.During my time as a graduate student pursuing a PhD in the field of electrical engineering at Purdue University, my primary research area was in fields and optics with a secondary area of power and energy devices and systems. Before then, my Master\'s research was principally in power and energy systems simulations. My PhD research was in the development of electronic design automation software for novel electromagnetic solvers with contributions to subgridding methods for finite-difference, time-domain methods. The bulk of my Master\'s research beforehand was devoted to analyzing and mitigating common-mode behavior in lighting and hybrid vehicle applications.

May 2025 — Present · Beaverton, OR, US

I am the acting bioimpedance (BioZ) applications expert within the Patient Monitoring group for the healthcare business. Customers turn to me for explanations of the BioZ architecture within our analog front end (AFE) products and for solutions in their own wellness and medical devices. I have authored application notes and visualization tools for the growing BioZ applications of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA or BIS) and electrodermal activity (EDA). I developed the laboratory skills and analytical techniques to achieve the highest levels of BIA accuracy and precision in challenging electrical environments, aiding customers and product development.
