Because the greatest design opportunities are materials limited, engineers need to explore alternative approaches to spark innovation. Biomimicry is a non-conventional approach to innovation using nature’s functions to develop engineering solutions. I led a three-year project to integrate bioinspired design into the Skunk Works technology and product development process. I created a corporate-wide Engineering eForum on biomimicry and Nature Inspired Design SharePoint for the Skunk Works. Integrating biomimicry into the product and technology development process is not only an effective means of sparking innovation but also instills a culture of sustainable product design for engineers. Design for Environment, ISO 14001, product stewardship, sustainability, pollution prevention (product substitution), integrating ESH into the business lifecycle, bioinspired design, employee culture change, environmental team lead, compliance, due diligence, risk assessment, DoD ESOH acquisition experience.
