ABOUT MICHAEL HANKE
I build engineering teams that turn hard science into products people can actually use. My background is in astrophysics, where I worked on extracting meaning from faint and noisy signals. That way of thinking stayed with me as I moved into machine learning, spectroscopy and large scale data systems. Over the past nine years I have focused on turning complex measurements into clear results, and along the way I have filed more than 20 patent applications in sensing and data analysis.I lead the Software, ML, and Data Science organisation at QuantumDiamonds and work closely with our founders to turn diamond based quantum sensing into practical products for industry. Our technology uses nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond to create highly sensitive magnetic field images of advanced electronic devices. This helps semiconductor companies and other innovators see what is really happening inside their designs, understand unexpected behaviour and track down issues that are invisible to conventional methods. My teams design the software backbone of our products. This includes control systems that coordinate the quantum hardware, data pipelines that process massive magnetic field measurements and algorithms that extract reliable insights from them. For the user it should feel simple: they put in a complex chip or sample and receive a clear picture and concrete conclusions. As our instruments moved from early prototypes to tools that fit into real failure analysis and metrology workflows, I led the growth of our group into dedicated teams for platform engineering and for data and algorithms. I invest a lot of energy in creating an environment where physicists, software engineers and data scientists can collaborate smoothly and feel real ownership of the systems we deliver.Areas of focus• Building and scaling effective engineering teams in deep tech environments• Machine learning and signal processing for demanding sensing applications• System and product architecture for data heavy scientific instruments• Turning ideas into patents, products and long term capabilitiesI enjoy speaking with people who work at the intersection of quantum sensing, data systems and engineering leadership. If you are exploring similar topics or are curious about how to make the invisible visible in your own products, I am happy to connect.
