I had an epiphany whilst working in the IT maintenance sector which was the start of an amazing journey! I’ve been in the IT hardware maintenance sector for many years now. Starting off in the north east in my early days and eventually expanding, covering all of the UK.I could see things were changing and I learned a couple of things that heavily influenced the course of my career. If I wanted to stay in this business, I needed to become a national player2. I began to understand the inefficiency and madness of hardware maintenance supply chainsVery similar to Dell when he bought a PC pulled it to bits and thought, hang on “I can build this cheaper, better” and just as good as IBM.I had a similar epiphany looking into the IT maintenance sector, albeit I could do this better, cheaper and differently! I applied the technique “service simplicity” in the early days which I realised later was actually a simple but very effective Lean methodology approach. This plan set out how we would deliver maintenance services using a new physical lean infrastructure and implementing connected thinking processes backed by value streaming every part of the supply chain. Today`s archaic systems remain entrenched and changing the way service maintenance is traditionally done is a huge challenge and continues today.
