About Michael Ehrlich
After getting my Ph.D. in Economics, I decided that I was not interested in starting a career as an academic because it seemed too slow for me. I wanted to \"do something\" and wanted a career with more direct feedback and action, so I got a job working on Wall Street as a trader in the Government Arb group at Salomon Brothers. After a stint in Tokyo, I was recruited to be a Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns where I was head of the Emerging Markets Fixed Income business unit. After leaving Bear, I bought a small business, FineTone, and totally transformed it into FineStar Imaging LLC. We were a document production and document management solutions provider. After selling FineStar my transition to becoming an academic at NJIT was a significant cultural transition as I became a government employee and union member within a very hierarchical field. Being an academic is great! I love our students and try to help them find their own successes. I especially enjoy helping our best students to discover their strengths often through competitions and engagements outside of the classroom. I am proud when our students move on to interesting careers. I also enjoy all of the research activities and think it is amazing how we can look at financial markets and institutions in interesting ways. My publication record is getting stronger as I progress. I probably spend too much time on service activities, but that is one of my strengths and I am driven to strengthen our institution and environment. I also focus on economic development. Specialties: My focus is on financial market failures and my research has centered on three areas. I have done significant work on Financial Bubbles and the failures of Structured Investment Vehicles and Housing Finance markets. I also am doing interesting work on the problems of New Venture Finance and do a lot of work on the problems of the earliest stage investments by Business Angels. Recently, I have worked with my PhD students on Healthcare market problems.
