Michael Cowdy is the Founder and Director of MOOWD, an interdisciplinary design studio advancing a new model of regenerative, place-based practice. With over 20 years of international experience across the UK, Australia, China, and the Middle East, Michael brings a unique perspective shaped by diverse geographies, complex urban conditions, and layered cultural contexts.His work is grounded in the belief that cities should evolve in harmony with ecosystems and communities. Whether guiding climate-resilient strategies or shaping people-centred public realms, Michael combines systems thinking with spatial clarity and design rigour. He has led high-impact frameworks such as Bristol’s Climate Resilient Estate Strategy, TfL’s Sustainable Development Framework, and Buckinghamshire\'s Project Groundwater—embedding data-driven design, performance metrics, and community value into the heart of each project.Michael is known for his narrative-led approach to placemaking. From reimagining the Al Buhayra Waterfront in Jeddah to revitalising Bristol’s Quakers Friars and YTL\'s Arena, he blends memory, ecology, and identity to create inclusive, enduring spaces. His work reflects a deep understanding of how places can connect people to both nature and heritage.Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to his practice. Across projects like Surf London, Brabazon City Green, and Cardiff’s Blue Line, Michael brings together architects, engineers, ecologists, and policymakers to co-create adaptive and resilient landscapes. His ability to align stakeholders around a shared vision ensures each project is both visionary and deliverable.A Fellow of the Landscape Institute, Recognised Practitioner of the Urban Design Group, and NLA Expert Panelist, Michael regularly contributes to national design panels, lectures, and juries. Through MOOWD, he continues to lead with purpose—designing places that restore ecosystems, reflect local stories, and support healthier communities.
