About Michael Lima

Professional systems/software safety engineer with more than eight years of experience in requirements derivation, architectural/functional partitioning, hazard analysis, detailed design, and verification of safety critical systems for the aerospace/defense industry. My primary specializations consist of code level hazard analysis, safety critical software certification, and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques for System Safety analysis and verification. I aspire to make purposeful contributions that drive innovative approaches to the development of safety critical embedded software applications and streamline the safety certification process in order to maximize product safety while also reducing lifecycle costs. My enthusiasm for real time embedded software development is what led me to pursue a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering after achieving my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I’m also a graduate of the Engineering Leadership Development Program (ELDP) at Lockheed Martin, which is a highly competitive program designed for early career engineers to accelerate development of technical and leadership skills.

Experience

  1. Lead Software Safety Engineer

    Lockheed Martin

Feb 2021 — Present · Orlando, FL, US

Led full accomplishment of Level of Rigor (LOR) objectives for hypersonic missile safety critical software, which culminated in successfully achieving airworthiness certification for flight test program under an accelerated schedule• Executed Failure Modes Effects Testing (FMET) process, which consisted of deriving an exhaustive set of fault injection test cases based on failure modes identified via hazard analysis to exercise safety design features in safety critical software • Maximized FMET coverage by ensuring allocation of sufficient fault injection cases to a variety of test resources ranging from Unit Test, Integrated Flight Simulation (IFS), Processor-in-the-Loop (PIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) to cover all FMET test objectives• Established closed-loop traceability infrastructure in which FMET test objectives were fully mapped to appropriate verification artifacts using Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) approach, ultimately satisfying program LOR objectives for In-Depth Safety Specific Testing specified in MIL-STD-882E• Conducted detailed software risk assessment for microcontroller component of missile computer, which involved evaluating safety critical dependencies in source code via a reverse engineered Unified Modeling Language (UML) model and executing MISRA static analysis to identify safety coding violations• Developed and successfully accomplished additional LOR activities consisting of MISRA static analysis, implementation of redundant logic fault checks, and unit testing execution to remediate software safety defects resulting from gaps identified in microcontroller risk assessment • Contributed to Safety Development Operations (SafeDevOps) corporate initiative which involved the creation of a standardized Software Safety workflow that leverages proven methodologies/toolsets to streamline the development of safe and certifiable software
