ABOUT MICHAEL BARTON
I study the spatial and temporal dynamics of crime—put simply, I’m interested in how space, time, and context shape criminal behavior. I\'m primarily a quantitative researcher, but I\'ve also co-authored theoretical work. Much of my research focuses on the relationship between gentrification and crime, and I\'ve also examined neighborhood-level influences on crime in places like college campuses and post-Katrina New Orleans. More recently, my work addresses urban bias in criminology by exploring crime patterns in small and mid-sized U.S. cities.My research has been published in journals including Journal of Criminal Justice, Crime & Delinquency, Urban Studies, Law & Society Review, and Youth & Society, and has been featured in The Washington Post and CityLab.In addition to teaching, I’m deeply committed to mentoring. I involve graduate students in my research and support their own scholarly development, while also mentoring undergraduates through honors theses and independent projects. I emphasize collaboration, critical thinking, and reflective learning in everything I do.
