I love my team at the Chaffee Zoo! My duties include: Utilizing applied operant conditioning via positive reinforcement to train novel behaviors with spot-necked otters, giant anteaters, harbor seals and California sea lions – these include teaching a young female sea lion to perform a 10 foot leap out of the water to touch a hanging buoy on cue, a giant anteater to hold steady for a voluntary blood draw from her tail, and a blind 400-pound male sea lion to hold his mouth open while a trainer brushes his teeth with an electric toothbrush Improving animal engagement with enrichment items by designing and building species-appropriate puzzle feeders and climbing furniture – my success in this prompted Nicole Presley, Curator of Mammals at the Chaffee Zoo, to write in my first annual review that I had already “shown great initiative with enrichment,” and that “Micaela has very strong enrichment skills […] She came into our section a year ago and has already helped this team to advance their enrichment program.\" Sharing information about wildlife and conservation with a skill and enthusiasm that compelled Steven Gonzales-Warkentin, executive assistant to the CEO of the Chaffee Zoo, to email my direct supervisor describing a private tour and training demonstration I gave for board members as \"amazing\" and \"very energetic, very knowledgeable, extremely impressive.\" Teaching animal care skills and providing caring, encouraging mentorship to volunteers, new employees, and apprentice keepers Professionally representing the Fresno Chaffee Zoo while sharing conservation messages and educational facts about wildlife on live television
