ABOUT MIA CANDY

I am a Senior Transportation Planner and Project Manager with Toole Design, where I leads the firm’s planning practice in Northern California. With over a decade of experience at the intersection of transportation, public health, education, and community development, I help cities create safer, more connected streets through multimodal corridor planning, Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, and integrated land use and mobility strategies.I thrive when building cross-sector partnerships - working closely with transit agencies, emergency services, school districts, grassroots nonprofits, research institutes, and local businesses to align diverse needs in complex street design projects. My work blends mixed-methods research, geospatial analysis, and storytelling with thoughtful, creative engagement practices grounded in my background in urban anthropology and youth development.Originally from South Africa, I bring an international and comparative lens to my work and a deep commitment to racial equity, informed by training with the Racial Equity Institute and the Thrivance Institute. I have supported communities of all sizes across the U.S, Canada, and South Africa to plan for healthier, more just, and more resilient transportation systems.
