About Mark Graban
Most improvement efforts don\'t fail because of bad tools or uncommitted people. They fail because the organization is already very good at something it doesn\'t want to be good at: making it easier to stay quiet than to speak up. When frontline staff see problems every day but don\'t raise them, that\'s not a training gap. It\'s a system working exactly as designed - just not in your favor. The real waste isn\'t in your processes. It\'s in everything your people already know but aren\'t saying. That\'s where I work. I help leaders in healthcare, manufacturing, and other industries close the gap between what people see and what the organization hears. The focus is on the leadership behaviors and cultural conditions - psychological safety, how mistakes are handled, how metrics are interpreted - that determine whether improvement sticks or quietly dies after the consultant leaves. What this looks like in practice: keynotes and workshops that shift how leaders think about problems and blame. Coaching engagements that change how executives respond in the moments that matter most. Consulting partnerships that move organizations from compliance-driven improvement to genuine learning. Why leaders trust me with this work: I\'ve spent 25+ years in this space, starting at GM, Dell, and Honeywell, then leading improvement in healthcare through Johnson & Johnson and the Lean Enterprise Institute. I\'m the author of several books, including \"The Mistakes That Make Us\" and \"Lean Hospitals\"- three of which have received the Shingo Publication Award. I host two podcasts (\"Lean Blog Interviews\" and \"My Favorite Mistake\") and have been writing at LeanBlog.org since 2005. I also serve as Senior Advisor to KaiNexus. None of that matters if the work doesn\'t land. What I hear most from clients isn\'t \"that was a great talk\"- it\'s \"our conversations changed after that.\" If your improvement results are frustrating despite smart people and real investment, the bottleneck probably isn\'t where you think it is. I\'m happy to compare notes - reach out or book a conversation through markgraban.com.
