About Martin Schubert
I\'ve recently joined Meta, where I launched an AI-guided design project that brings together FAIR and Reality Labs. At Google X, I founded and co-led an undisclosed deep tech project. I directed the project’s scientific and machine learning research, collaborating with leading academic groups, external research organizations, and other Google teams. I also developed a strong record of breakthrough individual contributions, including the invention of novel optimization methods that constitute the project’s core technology. Before launching this project, I pursued multiple early-stage ideas while on X\'s Rapid Eval team (an internal incubator). Previously, I held a broad role at Glo (a Google-funded microLED startup acquired by Nanosys) which included process integration, device design, data science, and software development. Prior to joining Glo, I was a Principal Engineer on the emerging memory cell team at Micron Technology, where I focused on nonvolatile conductive bridge RAM, including cross-point select devices for high-density arrays. I also served as Advanced R&D Lead for a Micron project aiming to deliver CMOS fab compatible LEDs. My team delivered a flip-chip architecture that leapfrogged a competing vertical chip design. I earned a PhD from RPI and MEng and BS degrees from Cornell University, all in Electrical Engineering and with a focus on semiconductor optoelectronics. My work included quantum transport simulations, LED and laser modeling, terahertz laser design, and genetic algorithms for optical coating optimization. During my studies, I proposed the polarization tunnel junction for large-bandgap semiconductors and pursued a cleantech startup aiming to develop this technology for water purifiers based on deep-ultraviolet LEDs. The concept won prizes from MIT and NASA at several business plan competitions. I also won the Lemelson-RPI award for work on polarized LEDs.
