About Meseret Asfaw
I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice–prepared, Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with over 15 years of progressive clinical, academic, and healthcare leadership experience. I currently practice as a psychiatric provider in an outpatient and substance use disorder rehabilitation setting in Virginia, delivering comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy for individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, and substance use disorders. In addition to my clinical work, I serve as nursing faculty at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I teach in graduate nursing programs, including DNP-level education, supporting advanced practice nurses in psychiatric assessment, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice. I currently teach at Howard University College of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences and Wilkes University. My academic career began at the community college level and has progressed to doctoral-level instruction, reflecting my commitment to advancing nursing leadership and psychiatric practice. Throughout my nursing career, I have held diverse clinical and leadership roles, including Registered Nurse in telemetry, medical-surgical, orthopedic, oncology, and neuroscience units at MedStar Health and The George Washington University Hospital. I also served as an Infection Control Nurse and Staff Educator in a 200+ bed facility, leading infection prevention initiatives, delivering clinical education programs, conducting staff competency evaluations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting quality improvement efforts. In these roles, I collaborated across interdisciplinary teams to strengthen patient safety standards and improve clinical outcomes.I find deep professional fulfillment in my role as a PMHNP, where I provide individualized, patient-centered care grounded in the understanding that each person’s mental health journey is unique and deserves thoughtful, evidence-based treatment tailored to their specific needs. At the same time, I am passionate about preparing the next generation of psychiatric nurse practitioners and nurse leaders.
