About Meritxell Ortodo Irausquin
As a Biomedical Engineering student at Boston University with a minor in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, I am passionate about transforming ideas into impactful solutions at the intersection of engineering, biology, and business. My academic and professional journey has been driven by a desire to design meaningful, real-world technologies, especially those that bridge innovation with social and environmental impact. I co-founded Agrinova, a venture that evolved from a gold medal-winning iGEM project into a startup focused on empowering urban agriculture through biosensing soil diagnostics. From engineering a microbial soil sensor to strategizing market entry, I\'ve navigated technical design and business development, giving me a unique edge in product commercialization. My experience spans wireless communication systems using infrared light, precision temperature sensors, and the application of synthetic biology in sustainable design. I’m proficient in CAD, MATLAB, and embedded systems, and I enjoy pushing boundaries through iterative prototyping, stakeholder interviews, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Fluent in Spanish, English, and Catalan, I thrive in global, collaborative environments and seek to build technologies that are not only functional but visionary. Let’s build what’s next, together

Co-founded Averra, a cleantech and agtech startup developing low-cost, real-time biosensors and analytics platforms to unlock soil intelligence for small and mid-sized farms. Our mission is to enable regenerative agriculture, improve farm economics, and open access to carbon markets. As COO, I lead operations, strategy, and execution, including:Venture Operations: Oversight of day-to-day operations, partnerships, and accelerator participation (Innovate@BU, CleanTech Open, etc.).Product Development: Bridging synthetic biology, microfluidics, and hardware engineering to advance our biosensor prototype from TRL 4 → 7.Business & Market Strategy: Designed and validated our razor-blade business model (hardware + SaaS subscription), set pricing, and built financial projections with target gross margins >70%.Fundraising & Grants: Secured over $20K seed grant, advanced in regional competitions, and actively engaged with investors, accelerators, and strategic partners.Team Leadership: Manage a cross-disciplinary student team, coordinating technical, business, and field deployment workstreams.Through Averra, I’ve developed hands-on experience in scaling early-stage ventures at the intersection of synthetic biology, climate tech, and entrepreneurship — building a company from concept to pilot readiness
