ABOUT WALTER MÉRIDA

I grew up in Guatemala, attended the United World College in Italy, and finished university in Canada. I work on hydrogen energy systems and clean technology. For my first job, I managed projects with Ballard Power Systems, British Gas Investments Canada and universities. I was a founder and director for General Hydrogen Corporation, and in 2016, I co-founded Rethink Climate: a company creator addressing market gaps in climate technology. I have worked at the Canadian Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation, and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, in Germany.At UBC, I have served as director for the Clean Energy Research Centre, as Associate Dean of Research and Industry Partnerships in the Faculty of Applied Science, as a Senior Advisor to the President and Vice-Chancellor, as co-Chair of the Climate Emergency Taskforce, and as a delegate to COP meetings. Currently, I am a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. I serve as Co-Chair of the New Carbon Economy Consortium, as Director of the Board for the Canadian Hydrogen Association, and as a Steering Committee member for the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials.
