ABOUT MERCEDES CLAY

My philosophy of student affairs is based on creating a setting in which students have the academic resources, social and personal support and facilitating an environment in which students are able to discover their full potential and develop their self-identities. I believe in creating opportunities for students to build leadership skills, explore their various career options, develop an understanding and appreciation for multiculturalism and become engaged in the social justice issues in their community and globally. I believe programs and initiatives should have a holistic approach that incorporates classroom instruction and co-curricular opportunities. This involves building collaborative relationships with all members of campus community (e.g. Academics, Athletics and Financial Aid) to ensure the students have access to the best resources available. I have over ten years experience in multicultural education, programming and student advising with working knowledge of the SEVIS system and processing international students. Instructor for a section of the First Year Seminar course.Committee Work:2016- Present- CARE Team2013- Financial Aid Appeals Committee2013- Strategic Plan Assessment Team2013- Student Financial Affairs Committee2013- Welcome Week Committee; Chair2011- Present- McMaster Symposium Planning Committee2011- Present- Summer Bridge Committee20••••12- Self-Study Sub-Committee20••••12- Connections Program Committee2009- Present- Satisfactory Academic Progress20••••11- Assessment Committee2006- Present- Retention Committee2004- Present- Faculty Senate Student Life Committee2003- Present- Diversity Council; Co-Chair
