Mel Williams is the Executive Director of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness for Claflin University. He served as the Interim Director of Public Safety for Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) from January 2017 until August 2020. Prior to HSSU, he served as the Director of Public Safety for Bethune-Cookman University until he retired in July 2016. Mel was a member of the Titusville Police Department (TPD) from 1988 until he retired in 2009 to serve at B-CU. He retired with the rank of “Major” & was in charge of the Support Services Division. Mel began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Orlando Police Department where he worked as a patrol officer, auxiliary motorcycle officer, mounted patrol, field training officer, field training coordinator, patrol sergeant, administrative assistant to Deputy Chief-Patrol, & investigations sergeant over Youth Services. At TPD he worked in the Uniformed Patrol, Tactical Patrol, the Neighborhood Patrol Unit (Bicycle Patrol), the Special Investigations, Community Services, Youth Services Division, Patrol Division, Investigations Division, & the Administration Division. He served as the department’s Training & Community Policing Coordinators, supervised the Color Guard & Honor Guard Units, was a member of the Recruitment Team, was team Commander of the Crisis Negotiation Team, & Commander of the department’s Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT), & was Executive Director of the Titusville Police Athletic League (PAL).Mel graduated from the University of the State of New York with a Bachelor’s in Administrative/Management Studies, & the University of Central Florida with a Master’s in Criminal Justice. He has attended numerous other management & executive leadership courses, including the prestigious Southern Police Institute’s 109th Administrative Officers Course, FDLE’s Chief Executive Seminar – Class #31, FBI’s Florida Executive Development Seminar, & the Florida Police Chief’s Association’s New Chief’s Seminar.
