ABOUT MELISSA ELDER
Adjunct professor of psychology with a multidisciplinary background spanning healthcare leadership, behavior change, and cognitive neuroscience. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive and neuropsychology, emphasizing the integration of brain structure and function, memory systems, and mind–body processes. I translate complex neuroscience concepts into accessible, clinically and practically relevant insights that help students connect theory to real-world application. My research has centered on memory and the extended hippocampal system, including work on visual working and recognition memory using MRI methodologies. My thesis examined the role of the fornix in visual recognition memory performance and reaction time, incorporating diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and structural analysis techniques. I am proficient in MRI analysis tools such as FreeSurfer and DSI Studio and have experience conducting statistical analyses in R.My professional experience across health coaching, chronic disease management, and academic research has been unified by a central question: how do neural systems shape behavior, and how can that knowledge inform health and well-being? I remain committed to bridging neuroscience, behavior, and real-world application through research, teaching, and collaboration.
