About Melissa P. Upton
As Emeritus Professor of Pathology at University of Washington, in Seattle, WA, I am an MD Anatomic Pathologist working part-time but also actively engaged in surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, and cytopathology, with focused specialty interest and translational research interests in GI, Pancreatobiliary, and Liver Pathology. I also pursue translational research in squamous carcinoma of the oropharynx. In October of 2018, I was inaugurated as President of the American Society for Clinical Pathology. It is an exciting role in a Society with a mission and goals aligned to mine. I am passionate about patient-centric work in an association that advocates for the professions of laboratory professionals and pathologists while serving patients around the world. Mentoring is one of my passions. Nothing is as satisfying to me as witnessing others discover their unique aptitudes and grow toward their full potential. Working closely with residents and fellows, as they train in pathology, is an honor and privilege.
Experience
Director, Gi and Liver Pathology Service
May 2003 — Present
I strive to deliver the highest possible care to patients. My responsibilities include directing a team of 5 faculty members with focused subspecialty interest in GI, Liver, and Pancreatobiliary diseases, including diagnostic work, translational research, and education of our pathology residents and fellows. We also work closely with clinicians who manage patients with these diseases, interacting directly with them at multidisciplinary clinics and conferences. UW is a major research university; therefore every diagnosis is an opportunity to ask questions about the disease process, optimized treatment approaches, and how best to serve the patients. We also educate pathologists and health professionals.
