About Melinda Knapp

I am most interested in producing research that is closely connected to classroom practice and effective models professional development. In my future research, the everyday work of teaching would become the object of ongoing investigation and fine-grained inquiry. Building upon my classroom teaching experiences, my research agenda centers on developing a more detailed understanding of the process of teacher learning and change within the context of mathematics classrooms and professional development settings. My overarching research interests include documenting teachers’ changing vision of high quality teaching while attending to the institutional contexts in which they work. I am also interested in studying which types of professional development experiences best leverage ambitious teaching practices required to impact student learning in mathematics classrooms. Lastly, I am interested in understanding how to professionally develop mathematics teacher leaders who can lead peers and work at all levels of the system in order to improve mathematics instruction for all students.
