As a Pediatric Nurse Extern on Comer 5 at The University of Chicago Medicine – Comer Children’s Hospital, I care for infants, children, and adolescents on a pediatric medical-surgical unit with a specialty focus on neurology, including seizure management and pre/post op care. I work one-on-one with my nurse preceptor, following her schedule to provide comprehensive patient care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. My responsibilities include performing and documenting pediatric assessments, monitoring vital signs, recognizing and reporting changes in neurological status, assisting with telemetry monitoring, providing tracheostomy care, performing wound care, l, and supporting seizure precautions and management. I also assist patients with daily activities and procedures, participate in patient and family education, and help create a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate environment for all patients on the unit.
