ABOUT MELANIE GIN

I am interested in building & contributing to teams that celebrate belonging, wonder, and integrity. Teams that care about each other as people, that express curiosity & humility, and that center the people impacted by the technologies and services we build. My story: I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a child, I was curious and imaginative - delighting in nature and poetry. In high school, I developed a passion for ethics and justice, which motivated my study of economics and political science at UCLA. I was/am fascinated by problem-solving and began full-time employment within Deloitte Consulting\'s Strategy and Operations practice, serving clients in financial services and tech. I left Deloitte to build a technical skillset, and joined Etsy as a full-stack software engineer in 2015. I contributed to a core platform team that internationalized the search experience for buyers and sellers in 10 languages across 80 countries for 50M people. I built the infrastructure for the first dynamic spelling correction engine at Etsy, an auto-complete service in search, and other linguistic tools serving non-English-speaking users. In 2018, inspired by my spiritual practice, I chose to explore livelihood that could directly be of service to my community and other vulnerable populations. In collaboration with local organizations, I started a social enterprise in Palestine providing access to tech education for young people, which was later funded by the U.S. State Department. At the same time, I provided tech consulting services to social impact startups in London and Jerusalem. In 2021, I began work as a Senior Program Manager at Code for America, partnering with government to drive economic mobility and racial equity outcomes for marginalized communities. Now I support local and state governments as an Associate Director of Solutions Engineering to build technology solutions that center impacted populations & support equity.
