ABOUT MELANIE TIMMINS

Early in my college career, I studied nursing. After some experience in the field, I realized that I prefer prevention to treatment, which led to my interest in Public Health. My Community Health Education degree included a range of public health fields: Epidemiology, Pathology, Program Planning + Evaluation, Global Health, Health Promotion, Health Systems, Environmental Health, Drug Education, Criminal Justice, and Public Health Law. I began as a student research assistant in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) facilitating systematic reviews for the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center. One of the most notable projects I worked on was a comparative effectiveness review for achieving health equity: My passion for public health stems from improving population health within communities. I worked as research assistant and community engagement coordinator for the Department of Dermatology at OHSU promoting their statewide public health campaign, which focused on access to education for early detection of melanoma to reduce skin cancer-related deaths in Oregon. I hit my stride as a primary liaison with external partners. I procured partnerships with the Oregon Department of Education and KATU News, the Johns Hopkins SPH Public Health On Call podcast, Oregon Coalition of Local Health Officials, the Oregon Community Foundation, the National Weather Service of Oregon, Oregon State Parks, Oregon Health Authority, 211 Info, the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Gear and TEDxPortland. I wrote a business proposal to OHSU to permit ESPN to film their providers in clinic, which was approved. I have a passion for public policy and am now serving on the Oregon State Bar as a board member for the Disciplinary Board and the House of Delegates. My career goal is to advance health equity through collaborating with diverse communities, planning programs that remove barriers at the community-level, analyzing public policy, and addressing systemic health inequities for vulnerable populations that effect social determinants of health. I am excited to join the Oregon Immunization Program department with Oregon Health Authority as we create access to immunizations for a healthier Oregon.
