About Melanie McDaniel
I am a partner in and leader of PwC’s Greater Houston State and Local Tax practice and PwC\'s national Credits and Incentives practice. My specialization in the area of credits and incentives focuses on assisting clients in securing tax and other financial benefits from the wide variety of credits and incentives available to businesses. These federal, state and local credits include federal and state point of hire employment related credits, such as the federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit (“WOTC”), statutory investment and research and development related credits, negotiated incentives and industry specific credits.Over the course of my 30 years of experience, my practice has included all aspects of state and local taxation including income, franchise, sales and use, property, excise and credits and incentives. Some key areas of focus include assisting clients with developing tax efficient structures, obtaining refunds for overpaid taxes, and evaluating and managing tax controversy matters. In addition, I have significant experience in ASC 740 complexities with respect to the financial statement impact of state and local taxes, tax credits, and uncertain tax positions. My experience spans a number of industries including consumer products, technology, entertainment, engineering and construction industries—both SEC registrants and privately held companies. Previously, I have led PwC SALT practices in Dallas, Denver and San Jose.Additionally, I am a frequent speaker on state and local tax matters presenting to organizations such as the Council on State Taxation and the Tax Executives Institute. I contributed to Bender’s State Taxation: Principles and Practice, authoring “Corporate Income and Franchise Tax Treatment of Special Entities” and developed the curriculum for and previously taught San Jose State University Masters in Tax Program’s “Advanced State and Local Taxes.”
