About Mel George

Energy-climate policy researcher working at the intersection of systems modeling, justice, and political economy.I analyze how energy and climate policies shape distributional outcomes, transition pathways, and institutional choices. My work combines integrated assessment models, energy-systems analysis, and equity and finance metrics to make climate scenarios more realistic and actionable.I began my career as an engineer, moved into public service to translate plans into action, and now work in modeling to connect evidence with policy. Along the way I learned that technologies matter, but they are only means to an end; policy failures usually lie outside the technology itself. I enjoy interdisciplinary problems that operate across scales and institutions. At the University of Maryland, I serve as a modeling lead on the NGFS central-bank scenario program and contribute to IPCC, JUSTMIP, CMIP7, and EU Horizon projects. I publish in leading energy & climate policy journals, and guest-edit special issues in Applied Energy, Climate Policy, and the npj portfolio. I have completed 200+ reviews across major journals. My focus: energy transitions, technology change, justice and service adequacy, climate finance, and the political economy of decarbonization.I work to connect rigorous modeling with the institutions and communities that act on climate decisions.
