About Céleste Matthew Hogan
I am a holistic, trans-disciplinary educator, researcher, activist, and performer specializing in a number of fields, primarily: quantum gravity, quantum cosmology, quantum information theory, and the philosophical foundations of physics; emergent/complex systems, post-colonial, process-relational, and integral theory; social and deep ecology, anarcho-syndicalism, and queer and trans ecofeminism; consciousness, psychedelics, and spirituality studies; and experimental electronic hip-hop music, performing as ℝ «».My primary professional research interest is in integral and process-relational quantum meta/physics and meta/philosophy, in the tradition of philosopher-physicists such as Karen Barad, David Bohm, Roger Penrose, Carlo Rovelli, Vandana Shiva, and Brian Swimme. I have received funding for my research from NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Foundational Questions Institute (FQxI), and the Big Questions Institute (Australia), as well as numerous universities. I hold a M.Sc. from the University of Massachusetts, and a B.A. from Earlham College, both in physics, and I have also performed advanced doctoral research with Dr. Jonathan Engle (of the ‘EPRL’ spinfoam model) at Florida Atlantic University, focusing on quantum geometry and cosmology, the results of which were published in journals such as Classical and Quantum Gravity and the International Journal of Modern Physics D. I have taught mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the collegiate level since 2004, at a wide range of institutions in both Costa Rica and the US, from top liberal-arts colleges in New York and Indiana (including Simon\'s Rock at Bard College, Earlham College, and Wells College), to research universities such as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Florida Atlantic University, and Texas Tech University – Costa Rica; additional institutions where I have also performed research include Michigan State University and Ohio University. An expert in the field of higher education, I am currently working towards a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, and the philosophy of science, specifically in (quantum) cosmology, as well as background-independent quantum gravity theories such as loop quantum gravity & spinfoam models/group field theory, causal dynamical triangulation, causal sets, twistor theory, Regge calculus, and quantum graphity. My work is also in conversation with philosophers and physicists such as Thomas Berry, Manuel DeLanda, Gilles Deleuze, Basil Hiley, Ervin László, Ilya Prigogine, A.N. Whitehead, and Ken Wilber, et al.

Simon’s Rock at Bard College actualizes the simple yet radical idea that many students are ready for college before the age of 18. This idea, first envisioned by Elizabeth Blodgett Hall on the original Simon’s Rock campus in 1966 in Great Barrington, MA, launched the Early College movement. Simon’s Rock carried out this mission for 59 years in Great Barrington, and in July of 2025 relocated to the Massena campus of Bard College, in Barrytown, NY.Simon’s Rock at Bard College has a diverse student population of approximately 180 students, with a significant population of students identifying as LGBTQIA+. This includes enrollment in the Early College AA degree program (~140) as well as in Bard Academy (~40). Launched in 2015, Bard Academy is a two-year high school program with courses designed and taught by college professors and leading to entry into college after the 10th grade. Students at the Massena campus may enter the Early College either as matriculants from Bard Academy or as students directly admitted to Early College after completing 10th or 11th grade. Duties include:Teach 3 courses per semester, including Bard Academy courses and introductory and intermediate Early College courses in mathematics (viz. Geometry II, Elementary Functions, Calculus I, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics).Teach individual and/or small group tutorials, and/or advise BA Senior ProjectsServe as individual Academic Advisor for Early College students and/or group Advisor for Academy studentsProvide weekly office hours for Academy and Early College students, at least one hour per course offered, and individual support to students as neededServe on committees supporting the operations and governance of the programsContribute to scholarship and/or service in the academic discipline(s)Active presence in campus culture, including regular participation in Community Lunch, Community Meetings, and campus events
