As a debutant principal leading a school in the northern part of Kolkata, I have come to realise that school leadership today is both an art and an act of endurance. It unfolds at a time when CBSE is itself reimagining the very architecture of schooling — embedding the spirit of the National Education Policy, implementing the School Quality Assessment and Assurance Framework, and foregrounding competency-based learning. These are exciting transitions, yet they demand recalibration at every level — of mindset, pedagogy, and purpose.The challenge, however, extends beyond frameworks. We stand before a generation deeply enmeshed in the rhythms of social media, often disengaged from the slow, deliberate process of learning. It is here that education demands its most human dimension — patience, persuasion, and empathy. My grounding in conflict studies has proved unexpectedly relevant, for the school today is a space of constant negotiation: between the aspirations of parents, the anxieties of teachers, and the shifting curiosities of students.A principal, I have learned, is not merely an administrator but a bridge — linking management with community, structure with sentiment, accountability with compassion. Teachers, too, navigate their own pressures; they need both understanding and direction. Leadership, therefore, must offer not command but steadiness — space enough for others to grow, and clarity enough for them to stay anchored.Over these two and a half years, the journey has been one of learning as much as leading. Each day reminds me that education, at its core, is not about control but about balance — the quiet conviction that even amid noise and distraction, learning retains its power to shape, refine, and renew.
