About Meg Smith
My ten years as the director of the Vermont Women’s Fund taught me much about the successes and pitfalls that face women in a rural economy. I am extremely proud of the data-driven work that was conducted under my tenure, beginning with Change The Story, a 5-year initiative providing data on the economic status of women in Vermont. This was followed by a second initiative called \"This Way UP: there’s power in our numbers” which provided the first current data on women-owned businesses in Vermont and their impact on Vermont’s economy. As a fundraising entity, I doubled the endowment of the VT Women’s Fund from $3M to $6M and raised an additional $2-$3M to support the special data initiatives and operating expenses. I also produced the annual event that featured speakers like Maureen Dowd, Reshma Saujani, and Jodi Kantor, to name a few.The underpinning of my work rests on the premise that you cannot achieve social change without economic change. I care deeply about the promise of women’s entrepreneurship as a track towards economic success. When women succeed, so do their communities as roughly 90% of a woman’s income goes back into her local community. With this in mind, I continue to champion women in our state and across the globe!
