About Mary Catherine Wellons
I am a multimedia journalist with a rich background in TV production, social media, and business news reporting. Since 2017, I have been based in CNBC\'s Washington bureau where I am deputy bureau chief. Prior to that role, I ran CNBC\'s San Francisco bureau. As bureau chief, I was responsible for launching the new bureau - a broadcast and digital hub - while also building a team of reporters and producers to cover the technology industry. As bureau chief, I also oversaw our event coverage and managed the production of many of CNBC\'s visiting shows including \"Mad Money with Jim Cramer\" and \"Squawk Alley\" as well as NBC\'s \"Today Show\" and \"Nightly News.\" Another perk of the job: getting to see the sunrise each day. Before making the move to the West Coast, I was CNBC\'s first director of social media. I led a team of social media editors in charge of using social media to grow our audience on-air and online, distribute content, and inform our reporting. During my time running CNBC\'s first-ever social media team, our Facebook fan base grew by more than 420%, Twitter by 200%, and our social traffic hit record highs. Prior to leading CNBC\'s social media team, I was a field producer for CNBC based in Los Angeles, where I covered media and technology. In my early days at CNBC, I produced for David Faber during the financial crisis, covering everything from the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers while also working on a documentary tracing the origins of the market collapse. I also worked with Erin Burnett and Lacy O\'Toole on their international trips, serving as a researcher on numerous longform projects. I started my broadcast career at NBC in the Page Program, where I decided to pursue production after an assignment with the Today Show-2011 SABEW Award Winner:\"Your Money Your Vote: The Republican Presidential Debate\"(Creative Use Across Multiple Platforms) 2009 Loeb Award Finalist:\"David Faber on the Fall of AIG\"(Breaking News)
Experience
Washington Dc Deputy Bureau Chief
Jan 2017 — Present · Washington, DC, US
I work hand-in-hand with our bureau chief as we determine editorial direction and priorities in a fast-paced, constantly evolving news environment. My role is a hybrid of leadership, production, and relationship-building. Beyond the daily news grind, I oversee our internship program, Capital Exchange newsletter, and podcast production. With my background in technology, I also support our reporting on tech policy, occasionally writing for CNBC.com. When time allows, I tap into my background as a field producer, helping with shoots at the White House, Capitol Hill, and beyond. The most memorable field assignment so far: a trip to Saudi Arabia in 2017 to profile Saudi Aramco and cover the first FII.
