ABOUT KATE MCLEAN

Kate McLean is a designer and creative mapper of urban smellscapes with a PhD from the Royal College of Art, UK. Her research interests are the practices of detecting and communicating fine-grained, human-centred, qualitative olfactory perceptions of cities worldwide. She runs sensory workshops and smellwalks with non-profit organisations, arts and humanities festivals, urban planners and education. Recent projects include public art programming with New York City Department of Transportation, The Future of Storytelling and a commission from MAIF Social Club in Paris exploring ephemeral olfactory cartographies. Work underway includes a commission with Musée de la Main in Lausanne and a keynote lecture to Landscape Architecture Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico Her co-edited book,\'Designing with Smell\' covers the practices, techniques and challenges of working with olfaction. As an early career researcher McLean has written for the Guardian newspaper and published in Design Communication and Leonardo. Kate is Programme Director for Graphic Design at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK in the department of Media, Art and Design teaching design modules in Simplicity & Complexity, Interpretation & Translation, and FMP. Memberships include: International Society of Typographic Designers (merit) and award-winner at the British Cartographic Society.
