During COVID-19, I was working at Intuitive Surgical in Sunnyvale, CA as a Manufacturing Engineer to make sure our life-saving diagnostic devices would continue to ship to our customers, despite the continuous supply issues we faced every day, and facing interruptions to our work due to the spreading virus. When most were working from home, I was working to ensure the manufacturing floor kept turning out our products with little to no disruption in serving our customer needs. This position was unique and helped me develop further as a manufacturing engineer in what felt like a “start-up” environment due to the low count of employees turning up during that time, and with how new Ion was to the market. I graduated with a MS and BS degree in biomedical engineering at Cal Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA in June 2018. I was hired by Confluent Medical Technologies to work as an Engineer II in their Rotational Program for Engineering. I gained experience working as a Project Engineer at the Rhode Island facility and have since moved to its Bay Area site to be a Manufacturing Engineer. As a Project Engineer, I worked with customers in the Medical Device Industry to help develop and optimize the manufacturing processes of their devices. More specifically, I gained experience with Confluent, a contract manufacturer, and by interactions with our customers through exposure to textile manufacturing and complex catheter products. Furthermore, I also have experience working for Kaiser Permanente as a clinical engineer that helped shape my perspective of the medical device industry from a clinical side.
