Legal Equalizer is a privately owned start-up that features a multi-faceted app aimed at promoting positive police encounters through a more legally informed citizenry. The majority of the public does not know the extent of their legal rights or are misinformed on what their rights truly are. Ambiguity, uncertainty, and misinformation concerning the law often results in unnecessary conflict. This app will assist both law enforcement and the citizens by correctly educating users on their legal rights. The app is a crash course for citizens on what to do and what not to do when encountering law enforcement. The civil rights information it provides is state specific based upon the location of the user at the time the app is used. The features include an emergency button which records the initial interaction between the citizen user and the law enforcement officer, a “stream-to-cloud” recording on a cloud system, and a “text alert” that sends a text message alert along with a recording to two emergency contacts. Updated versions will also provide video recording options, as well as immediate contact with a lawyer in the user’s geographic proximity. The launch of this app looks to capitalize on the national demonstrations and unrest in response to alleged police misconduct across the nation. Citizens realize the importance of knowing their rights, and asserting their rights in an appropriate and legal fashion. Now, more than ever, citizens are seeking out and paying for mechanisms that help them invoke legal protection and ensure personal compliance.
