ABOUT MEHRTASH BABADI
I am currently a Senior Research Leader at Isomorphic Labs (2025–present), where our mission is to “solve all disease”. We do so by reimagining living matter as an information processing system and debugging its underlying isomorphic code.Previously, I served as the Director of Computational Methods in the Data Sciences Platform at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (2016–2025), and as an Institute Scientist (2023–2025). During this time, I founded and led Cellarium AI Lab, a AI/ML | Cell & Tissue Biology research group focused on developing ML architectures, as well as open-source and production-grade software tools and services that emphasize innovation, mathematical rigor, usability, transparency, and reproducibility. Cellarium’s research centered on probabilistic machine learning methods for analyzing single-cell droplet-based and spatial omics data, cellular morphology, electrophysiology, and voltage imaging, with wide-ranging applications across psychiatric, cardiovascular, and infectious disease research. Before founding Cellarium, I was a core developer of GATK and built GATK-gCNV, a generative modeling approach to germline copy-number variant detection with validated clinical-grade accuracy.Earlier in my career, I spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at the California Institute of Technology (2013–2015), conducting research on non-equilibrium superconductivity and the relaxation dynamics of far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body systems.I hold a Ph.D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from Harvard University (2008–2013), and B.Sc. degrees in Mathematics and Physics from Sharif University of Technology (2004–2008).
