About Mauhamad Baarine
Curious Scientist with passionate interest in human health and healthcare industry.I have been working in the field of biomedical research and clinical application for more than seven years. I am continuing my research at Medical University of South Carolina in USA. My research relates to major health problems in our society (Neurodegenerative disease: strok, Multiple Sclerosis, X-ALD…). The results of my research will facilitate clinical and pharmacological intervention. X-ALD is the most common leukodystrophy, accounting for about half of all leukodystrophies. The condition occurs in all ethnic groups. During my PhD training at University of Burgundy, France, I worked on the elaboration of cytotoxic and pro-oxidant effects and mechanisms of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids (VLCFAs) on glial cells used as model for X linked Adrenoleukodystrophy disease. As a postdoctoral fellow at MUSC, I carried out X-ALD disease research and mainly focusing on the role and implication of mitochondria in the progression of rare peroxisomal X-ALD disease. I developed a new cell model of X-ALD using induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSC) from human fibroblast. IPSCs are considered at the forefront for diseases modelling and cell therapy. I developed a great expertise in generating IPSC from fibroblast and then differentiating these IPSCs to neurons and different type of glial cells (Oligodendrocytes and Astrocytes). I have a broad background in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and IPSC biology with specific training and expertise in key research areas for this application. I consider myself has the expertise, leadership and motivation necessary to successfully carry out any project in the field of IPSC biology. My research is creating not only a better understanding of this disease but also, better forms of treatment. As a result of my research contributions and continued work in the field, there has been several significant advancements in Adrenoleukodystrophy research.
