About Mayank Kumar
As a Software Engineer 2 at Microsoft, I contribute to the development of the Hyper-V platform within the Base Operating Systems - Azure Compute team, focusing on Confidential Computing for Azure. My work includes building a microkernel in Rust, implementing platform support for Confidential Windows Containers, and addressing critical bugs across the virtualization stack. With a Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology and Engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology, I bring expertise in systems programming, virtualization, and cybersecurity to create secure and efficient solutions. My goal is to advance a future where security is integrated by default, fostering trust and reliability in technology.

Base Operating Systems - Azure Compute (current) I\'m working on building Hyper-V Platform, mostly in the areas of Confidential Computing for Azure. Built a microkernel from scratch in Rust, used to validate virtualization features and ensure quality across Azure VMs. Implemented platform support for Confidential Windows Containers on Hyper-V. Developed features and resolved bugs across the virt-stack, from the hypervisor and host compatibility layer (Paravisor) through UEFI to the guest kernel drivers. Debugged and fixed multiple critical bugs in HCL, an embedded Paravisor for Confidential Virtual Machines (CVMs). Led quality initiatives fixing critical bugs to improve Hyper-V stability on the ARM64 platform.Working with Azure Edge + Platform (20••••24)Azure Stack HCI (1y)Prior to Hyper-V, specialized in providing generalized cloud services to Microsoft Azure’s Edge devices portfolio. Presented a talk, ”Azure Confidential Computing meets eBPF,” at a Kernel Meetup hosted by Microsoft in March 2024. Independently resolved critical memory leaks in multiple microservices, reducing memory utilization by 80% and 90th percentile latency by 85%. Developed an orchestrator service that improved quality pipeline stability from 50% to 100%; adopted by several adjacent teams. Developed observability for key service KPIs with alerts to maintain service SLAs. Developed a container image vulnerability patch workflow to reduce man-hours by 90%. Built a general-purpose event framework to create and auto-mitigate production incidents.
