Supported implementation of Georgia’s landmark sentencing reform law (HB 582), creating pathways for domestic violence survivors to receive reduced sentences. Conducted qualitative interviews with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated survivors, developed interview guides, and analyzed data to inform advocacy and policy initiatives. Collaborated with cross-sector partners to advance research on justice-impacted survivors and contributed to the design of a statewide data collection project to strengthen evidence-based policy and survivor support.

ABOUT MAYA FERGUSON
I am currently pursuing a Master of Public Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, with a concentration in Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences and a certificate in Maternal and Child Health. As a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, where I earned a B.S. in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience with a minor in Intergroup Relations, I am passionate about understanding the intersections of mental health, race, childhood trauma, neurodiversity, and sexual assault awareness. My work focuses on advocating for sexual assault resistance and prevention, particularly through public health and education. I have experience in facilitating dialogue, crisis intervention, high-risk advocacy, and working with both children and adults. My roles as a student, researcher, and activist have allowed me to engage deeply in social justice work, and my personal perspective as a Black woman informs my understanding of the historical and systemic health risks faced by communities of color. I am eager to continue exploring the intersections of public health, adolescent psychology, and intergroup relations, with a particular focus on advancing trauma-informed care and violence prevention efforts. I am always looking to connect with others who are passionate about research, advocacy, and hands-on work in public health and social justice.
