About Maya Darville
I am an incoming Fulbright Scholar, poised to embark on an English Teaching Assistantship in Ghana. This transformative opportunity will immerse me in Ghanaian culture while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to my students\' educational journeys. Following my Fulbright experience, I plan to pursue a dual JD-PhD program, with the ultimate goal of becoming both an Africana Studies professor and a civil rights lawyer. By blending my passions for academia and law, I aim to enhance my advocacy for social change, addressing systemic inequalities and empowering communities within the African Diaspora. My academic foundation was laid at Barnard College of Columbia University, where I earned a B.A. in Africana Studies and American Studies with a minor in Anthropology. Graduating magna cum laude and being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa stand as testaments to my academic rigor. My contributions to the field were further recognized with the Quandra Prettyman Prize in Africana Studies. As a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, I deepened my commitment to Africana Studies and research on the unique experiences within the African Diaspora. My scholarly interests lie at the intersection of African diaspora history, activist narratives, and women\'s, gender, and sexuality studies. Leadership has been a cornerstone of my academic journey. Serving two terms as President of the Barnard Organization of Soul and Solidarity, the college\'s Black student organization, I honed my skills in advocacy and community building. This experience, coupled with my academic background, has solidified my dedication to amplifying Black voices and experiences in both academic and social spheres. As I move forward, I remain committed to bridging scholarship and activism to effect meaningful change.
