About Max Ando

I am a law student with a background in jazz performance and music research. My professional and research interests center on the history of 20th century Black American music and copyright issues in the digital age. I have performed with various jazz and classical ensembles throughout Illinois and the United States, and studied trumpet under Tito Carrillo, Charles Daval, Pat Harbison, and Jeff Helgesen. While at University of Illinois, I researched copyright law\'s effects on musicians\' creative processes. My current research examines how shifting copyright law affected hip-hop artists’ creative practices in the early 1990s. I also have extensive experience in competitive youth marching arts. Currently, I teach marching brass at the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps.Outside of my primary research and performance interests, I worked for the past 7 years as a Lab Assistant at the CU Community Fab Lab, where I assisted patrons with project design and tool usage. I also interned at the Champaign County Public Defender’s Office, where I reviewed evidence, conducted research, and drafted motions.

   At the Spirit of Atlanta, I provide individual and section-level feedback on brass instrument technique and musical approach. Though I focus on the trumpet, I have given instruction to all sections of the ensemble. I also provide input and information to caption-level staff to aid in broader ensemble instructional planning. In addition, I have helped manage off-season digital assignments.
