ABOUT MAX SLATER

I am an architectural student with experience and interest in urban design who investigates human-centric narratives; “people need places”. I am looking to further my career as a professional in both urban design and architecture and I am developing my skillset to be able to design at the wider city scale down to the technical detail. I am currently studying my masters of architecture at Oxford Brookes, where I have completed the urban design specialism where I have had the opportunity to integrate urban analysis and morphological studies with temporary architecture detailing. I am currently working as an assistant urban designer at Savills, where my role progressed from a summer scheme student. I have been working a mixture of part and full time alongside my studies, working on producing Design and access statements for urban extensions and producing drawings for other documents. As a summer scheme student, I produced a feasibility study, proving layout, LVIA drawings and developed general masterplanning skills. My time at Richards urban design was predominately used to create visuals for documents and 3d concept development, particularly for ‘North Aschurch Garden Communities’, a new town project in which I developed digital models and images for consultation and design codes. My time in industry has been spent in RIBA stages 0 through to 2.5.My first year at MArchD has been used to develop a comprehensive understanding of place-identity and exploration into environmental behavioral psychology. I have created a research project that configures an evaluative matrix of place-identity in parks to assess features of gentrification facilitation and employed those findings to logically produce an architectural branding toolkit - a park on Brookes campus looking to challenge the socioeconomic land issues in Oxford and enhance the creative and open identity of the Brookes university. I took part in an international masterplan project in Greenwich, London, a 64 hectare brownfield site that our team regenerated into an identity enhanced riverside development.My personal ethos as a designer is a combination of urban scale understanding and thinking, delivered through architectural detail and design, producing projects that counter wider issues by creating micro experiences that can be interacted with to invoke emotion and response.
