This includes reporting on committee hearings, floor debates, press conferences, etc. from the Capitol building in Springfield, Illinois, as well as building relationships with lawmakers, lobbyists, advocacy groups and state employees, and keeping our audience up-to-date on policy issues.Cover and produce 1-4 stories a day for our audio newscasts, 4-minute long feature stories, and articles for our website, in accordance with NPR-style. Share our content with public media stations across the state, from WNIJ in Dekalb to WSIU in Carbondale.Contribute to our election/political coverage, including working with the Chicago Sun Times on online voter guides, profiles of candidates, and election night audio and web stories. Also includes coverage of major political events, such as the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Specialize in topic areas within the statehouse beat, such as reproductive rights and criminal justice. This includes contributing abortion policy stories to NPR, appearing on Here and Now, NPR\'s All Things Considered and Morning Edition to discuss bail reform and police brutality, working with our data team on abortion clinic stories, working with our prisons and investigative teams to dig into drug exposures at Illinois state correctional facilities, and spearheading ongoing coverage of litigation against gun control policies in Illinois.Sitting in the hiring committee for our new PM editor. This included reviewing the candidates\' resumes and cover letters, as well as interviewing them. Work as a fill-in PM producer of our All Things Considered audio newscasts. This includes working with reporters and editors on slating newscast items, writing up 3-4 sentence headlines on breaking news, and reviewing audio files and scripts for errors before airing.
