ABOUT MAURA F. KOUTOUJIAN PCC CPHWC
PHYSICIAN COACHINGCoaching is like a bridge, connecting you from where you are now to where you want to go. This bridge also links the science of medicine with the human skills essential for a physician’s success. My clients are exceptional clinicians, yet many struggle to improve their interpersonal skills, and to navigate conflict and overwhelm effectively. There is no template, no script; we adapt to where dialogue leads us.I support physicians in developing self-awareness, vulnerability, compassion, and curiosity. My sessions focus on shifting a client’s awareness toward conscious choice with intention. These individuals engage in curious reflection, demonstrating the patience to pause and critically examine their assumptions, fostering deep listening, and transitioning from automatic and reflexive responses to deliberate and reflective approaches. Just as they practice medicine, they begin to practice presence and build rapport to develop healthy interprofessional relationships.I am responsible for keeping up with and understanding the complexities and ambiguities of workplace dynamics and politics, the work and lives of physicians, and the pressures they face. These proactive measures allow me to recognize and address many stressors affecting my clients during our coaching engagements, including procrastination, managing emotions, navigating conflict and difficult conversations, providing and receiving feedback, and working with burnout and its components— cynicism, hopelessness, and apathy. Despite earning accolades for teaching and practicing medicine in a major academic medical center, many practitioners still experience imposter syndrome. Validating these feelings and supporting my clients through them fosters transformative self-efficacy.I have assisted physicians in developing their leadership skills and executive presence as they transition from individual contributors to leaders. I have advocated for these individuals to reduce negative affective behaviors such as shame and blame while promoting growth, learning, and fostering strong relationships and team cohesion. I encourage curiosity, guiding them in managing challenging situations with dignity and professionalism. This is often achieved by enhancing engagement with their strengths and validating the strengths of others. With a commitment to the coaching process, physicians can experience growth and fulfillment, transform themselves, and positively impact those they lead, the organizations they serve, and the patients for whom they care.
