I have been fortunate to spend over two decades in medicine, clinical informatics and engineering, where my enthusiasm for developing innovative solutions has been geared towards enhancing healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency. My journey includes 15 years as a practicing hospitalist and 5 years as a medical director, roles that have enriched my perspective as a clinician, quality improvement advocate, informaticist, and software developer.Currently, as the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Providence, I am privileged to guide a dedicated team of over 500 clinical informaticists, impacting healthcare across nearly clinics and over 50 hospitals. Our collective goal is simple yet ambitious: to arm our healthcare providers with the finest tools, support, and education, enabling them to deliver exceptional care to patients and communities.Innovation, to me, is not just about new ideas but about making meaningful change. I’ve been involved in the development of several technical and operational advancements, including a recent project where I led the development of an initiative (ProvARIA) that integrates generative AI into our medical record system. The core of my approach is to foster innovations that are not only groundbreaking but also practical and widely adopted, ensuring they make a tangible difference.
