ABOUT MATT SASSEN
I work in PwC\'s Tax Risk and Dispute Resolution Team where I help clients throughout the full cycle of tax risk management (prevention, management and resolution of disputes with HMRC). I have considerable experience in dealing with HMRC across all taxes and, because of my eleven years experience as a former Inspector of Taxes at HMRC, I can offer a unique perspective to help clients reach the most beneficial outcome in their dealings with HMRC.I have experience of HMRC enquiries into the whole taxpayer spectrum, from within HMRC and since joining PwC, ranging from employees and small business owners to multinationals, and from single aspect enquiries to cross-tax criminal investigations. I have also been responsible for drafting tax technical manuals and technical updates for other tax professionals and the delivery of training to colleagues.Recent experience includes- Assisting clients to manage HMRC enquiries. Whilst as HMRC I worked closely with their ‘Risk and Intelligence’ teams which has given me an invaluable insight into HMRC’s case selection processes. I have a particular focus on supporting clients who submit Research and Development (R&D) Relief or RDEC claims to manage the HMRC enquiry process, and to embed systems and processes to capture important evidence relating to their activities to maximise value from their future claims- Helping clients navigate HMRC\'s disclosure facilities to resolve historic tax issues (including the Digital Disclosure Facility, Contractual Disclosure Facility, R&D Disclosure Facility). Due to my HMRC training and background I am well placed to offer client\'s real insight into the best method of helping them to resolve their ongoing issues with HMRC- Helping clients to manage HMRC’s increasingly thorough approach to considering issuing penalties for inaccurate tax returns. The combination of my HMRC background, and understanding of recent case law, allows me to ensure that the best possible outcome is negotiated for all of my clients- Supporting clients with Time To Pay proposals to HMRC, either following the conclusion of an enquiry or in respect of ongoing PAYE/CT/VAT liabilities- Working with large businesses to help them to understand and comply with a range of recent legislative measures impacting their corporate governance including; Tax Strategy publication, Senior Accounting Officer processes and controls, and compliance with the Failure to Prevent the Facilitation of Tax Evasion legislation.
