Senior Creative Director @BlackLine

View department →

Los Angeles, CA, US

Reporting to the CMO, I lead the in-house team that produces all customer-facing creative for a public B2B SaaS company in the enterprise fintech space — across brand, web, video, events, and integrated campaigns. I directly lead the design and visual identity system work that shapes every touchpoint. The 2025 refresh was a full-scale evolution — moving from a traditional brand system to one designed for flexibility, consistency across high-volume output, and expansion as the company scales into new products and markets.I\'m also the creative owner of BeyondTheBlack, BlackLine\'s flagship customer conference series. Every event is a full-spectrum branding exercise — visual identity, mainstage scenic and lighting, executive presentations, on-site videography and photography, and the full promotional arc leading up to each show. The series runs annually with stops in North America, the UK, EU, and Australia.

ABOUT MATT MURRAY

For most of my career, I was an agency creative — building brands and shipping campaigns for the kinds of clients you\'d recognize: Nike, Google, Disney, Netflix, Hulu, Samsung, and a long list more. Agency life taught me craft, range, and how to make great work under real constraints. In 2018 I moved in-house. It was a deliberate decision, not a default. I wanted to go deeper than agency rotations allow — to own a brand instead of borrow one, to live with the consequences of the work, and to build a team I could grow.Today I\'m Senior Creative Director at BlackLine (NASDAQ: BL), a public B2B SaaS company in the enterprise fintech space. I lead the in-house team that produces our customer-facing creative — brand identity, integrated campaigns, web, video, events, and the rest. We work across regions, audiences, and product lines, and we do it as one team rather than a stack of disciplines.A few things I\'ve come to believe over 20+ years in the business:Quality and quantity aren\'t a tradeoff.B2B SaaS often defaults to high-volume, low-craft output. I think that\'s a false economy. The best in-house teams ship at speed — and hold the line on craft. A brand that consistently looks and feels considered is a measurable competitive advantage.Design happens between the lines. Some of my best work has come from spending time with adjacent teams — product, content, sales, RevOps — and bringing what I learn back into the creative. I don\'t believe in staying neatly inside a creative lane. The work gets better when you understand the whole business.Communication is a craft of its own.I\'ve worked with every kind of leader, peer, client, and direct report. I\'ve learned to calibrate — to meet collaborators where they are, whether that\'s a senior leader fluent in brand strategy or a cross-functional partner seeing creative work for the first time.Tools change. I\'ve designed my way through several eras of them, and AI-assisted design is reshaping the next. The job stays the same: figure out what the business actually needs, make it useful, and make it well.
