About Matthew Terrill

Currently 5+ years in to my tenure as the Controller at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Together with my team and colleagues, we have delivered considerable improvements to organizational processes and controls as well as demonstrable positive financial results. A few highlights: we have introduced cloud-based paperless AP, documented and improved AP and revenue recognition processes, transitioned to pay 95% of vendors by EFT, implemented cloud-based participatory budgeting software, secured funding & kept all staff paid throughout the covid-19 crisis and mandated public closures, delivered on-time and no-adjustment audits, and delivered operating surpluses to fund our operating reserve in each fiscal year of my tenure. We are also nearing completion of a finance ERP system migration from Financial Edge to Sage Intacct. My team has achieved these results by building relationships and trust with each other and colleagues throughout the organization, working from the principle that putting people & relationships first creates the conditions for us all to win. Previously spent 3.5 years in financial reporting in private equity and venture capital at Bain Capital after 7+ years as an auditor and CPA working with the one of the top national public accounting firms in the United States and one of the most respected firms in the Greater Boston Area. I enjoyed serving a wide variety of clients in the non-profit sector and financial and professional services industries in both Kansas City and Boston. Specialties: accounting and finance daily operations and workflows, not-for-profit organizations, endowed foundations, colleges and universities, fair value standards, auditing investments, trade organizations, small and medium donor-based organizations, private equity firms, tax-basis reporting for investment limited partnerships, professional service firms (e.g. law and advertising), financial institutions, and community banks.

I love being part of the Gardner team and serving as the Museum\'s Controller. I am responsible for financial management and reporting, budgets & forecasting, and internal controls design and monitoring. I see Finance\'s role at the Gardner as serving & supporting my colleagues\' work, the Museum\'s mission, and the community\'s needs by stewarding and sustaining the Museum\'s financial resources. Bringing my 12+ years of professional experience to bear in this environment, I help ensure the Museum\'s current and future success by ensuring it continues to refine and improve financial controls, procedures, and practices. Additionally, I serve the Museum\'s strategic commitments by sitting on the staff task force for Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, & Inclusion.
